Sheep (Latin Ovis aries) — artiodactyl mammal from genus of rams of family cavicorn. This animal already in extreme antiquity was cultivated by the person, generally thanks to the dense wool and edible meat. Now short-haired sheep wool, or fleece, is used by the person more often than hair of any other animal. The sheep meat called by mutton is one of the most important products of consumption in many countries of the world. In addition to receiving wool and meat, sheep also part for receiving sheep milk, the sheep cheese produced from it, cooking fat and skins (sheepskin). Now the greatest livestock of sheep is available in China (about 144 million heads), Australia (98 million), India (apprx. 60 million), Iran (54 million), New Zealand (44 million), Great Britain (36 million), the Republic of South Africa (St. 29 million), Turkey (27 million), Pakistan and Spain (on 24 million). In the CIS countries sheep breeding is most significant as the animal husbandry industry in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
The sheep was cultivated by the person already in extreme antiquity, more than 8 thousand years ago in the territory of modern Turkey, Syria, northern Mesopotamia.
Assumed that sheep are descendants of mouflon or urial. Data of the cytogenetic analysis allow to consider that the mouflon was ancestor of sheep. The karyotype of urial contains 58 chromosomes while at sheep and mouflon chromosome number is equal to 54.
